So, where possible, I have turned the theme to one of geographical settings. But I discerned that my journeyings became muddled with a mass of conveyances that, all too often, broke the environmental order. Being a tidy-minded person I attempted to arrange the order of chapters into journeys made in particular environments and using particular modes of vehicle. Travel with a horse, a camel, a mule, a bicycle journeying by train, bus, lorry, dinghy, elephant, covered wagon, dog sledge, car, felucca, ship and more opened up the subject considerably and put extra colour into the realm of travel and travel writing. Yet it came to me, upon assembling my experiences of travel over seventy years of a lifetime, that undiluted walking covered only a fraction of it.

Y favourite method of travel will, I think, always be walking.
